Homework: Theme 8/7/2013

In class today, we discussed the fact that a theme is the author's message about life in a story.  We usually have a message or a lesson learned from a story, and that is the story's theme.  Stories can have one or several themes, but most stories have one main theme.  Also, the theme is rarely stated, but you, as the reader, must use the details and events of the story to infer the theme.

For your homework, follow the steps below:

1.  Go to the following link
http://www.ereadingworksheets.com/reading-worksheets/theme-lesson.htm

2.  Read through each of the tabs or links about theme.  Just click on each white title on the left of the screen, and it will open a slide like a power point on the right of the screen.

3.  Read the three practice stories at the end of the links, "Once there was a mean", "Angie loved to draw", and "Jenny hated reading class."

4.  Choose the profile anonymous before you click "publish"

4.  Post the theme to one of the three stories that your read.  You only need to choose ONE to post about on the blog.

5.  Feel free to respond to other's posts as well.

*Remember to include your name with your post!!!

  2. The theme of "Angie loved to draw" is a life lesson to be responsible and be organized or it will come back to bite you. Plus, Angie felt pretty foolish because she was stuck with the drab pencils.

    "Jenny Hated Reading Class"
The theme of this story is that if you are frustrated, you should always ask for help. In the story, Jenny was getting frustrated because she could not figure out her work.

  11. The theme to the second story is always keep track and take care of other peoples things when you borrow them. What led me to that theme was the main character kept losing the markers.

  12. I think the theme of "Once there was a mean" is that you should always tell the truth or people won't believe you when you really are telling the truth. Because when the boy keeps tricking the people of the town saying that there was a wolf, when there actually was a wolf at his house he yelled for help and no one believed him.

  18. I read the little book Angie loved to draw.So first she lost her markers at home. So she asked the teacher can I use some of your markers? So it was near the end of the school day so she took the markers home to finish coloring. Then she lost them.So she wanted to color again so she asked for more markers. Then the teacher said this is my last pack.So when she left school she left them all of the floor at school so the custodian swept them away.So now she has to draw with pencils.

  19. Theme: Angie's Markers

The story was about how Angie loved to draw, but always lost her markers. She borrowed the teacher's and
the custodian swept them up. The teacher had no more marker and she had to draw with drab pencils.

  20. I think the theme was, there was a little boy that was always mean and played tricks on other people and when he was at his farm and he really saw the wolf and yelled for help no one came because he always played tricks. This is by Maddie George.

  26. I think the theme for the story, “Once there was a mean…” is, if you lie all the time, people aren’t going to believe you when you’re telling the truth. I believe this is the theme because, after lieing twice about a wolf attacting the town, no one belived the boy when there was an actual wolf attacking. In real life, if you’re a liar, people aren’t going to believe you when you need them to. Like when you need their help.

  31. I read "The Mean Boy Who Cried Wolf" I think the theme of the story is to always be honest. When you're not honest and fool people a lot about the same thing, it might really happen and when you say it no one will believe you. What made me decide this theme is because the boy kept fooling people about a wolf and it was never true and when there was really a wolf no one came to help him.
